Historic buildings are never free from expense; it is advisable to forward plan to keep up the maintenance needed. Small repairs left outstanding now can lead to major failure and greater cost in the future. Maintaining roofs, for example, can be expensive. We would recommend a quinquennial survey be carried out so that a programme of works can be planned.
Many older buildings require special consideration; modern techniques and materials can be inappropriate for their maintenance, conservation or renovation, leading to greater problems later in the building's life. Identification of the appropriate method of repair is very important.
Our senior partner, Nigel Tonge is qualified in conservation. His knowledge and expertise has been built up over some thirty or more years, with historic and period properties.
THG has particular interest in listed and historic buildings, including "Witchert" cottages (a form of unique local cob walling). We advise clients on how to maintain and preserve these buildings.
